The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
