RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
