Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
