Sports Champions Appeal on Iranian Authorities to Halt Death Sentence of Champion Boxer

In excess of two dozen Olympic medallists, mentors and additional global sports figures have endorsed a statement demanding a halt to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and trainer, who is facing execution in the nation.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

Amidst rising worldwide anger over the nation's increasing application of the death penalty as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased statement denounces the government's decision to uphold the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, 30, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for participating in countrywide demonstrations in 2019 and indicted of supporting an resistance movement. He has endured five years in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and confined in isolation.

“Sport is designed to promote hope, solidarity, and fortitude,” the signatories expressed. “The execution of a titleholder for his beliefs is a direct assault on these principles and a warning to any competitor who ventures to express dissent.

Record of Executing Competitors

The letter noted that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was part of a pattern and highlighted Iran’s history of executing competitors for their convictions, including a national team leader, captain of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, captain of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, an athlete, a young Iranian wrestling champion, was also executed.

Other signatories to the statement include Tracy Edwards, who skippered the first women's squad in a global yacht race and was the initial female to be awarded a prestigious sailing award; the previous leader of the soccer side a sports advocate; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the country's selection for the 1978 World Cup.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was detained in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of state assets”. His verdict has been reversed on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was maintained on the third occasion. His trial was criticized as “deeply biased” by rights defenders and groups.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to prevent the boxer's execution follows a previous appeal to the global human rights chief for freedoms, backed by over one hundred advocates and organizations, demanding intervention to avert the athlete’s capital punishment.

Capital Punishment Escalation

According to data, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has reached horrific dimensions”. In 2023, authorities put to death at least over 850 people – a nearly half rise on 2022. In the prior period, data showed nearly a thousand deaths, representing the peak figure since 2015. More than eight hundred people have been sentenced so far in 2025.

Dissidents and dissidents are focus, particularly in the aftermath of the 2022's uprising. Analysts say the government have used the executions to stifle opposition, generate apprehension among the citizenry and strengthen their control on rule.
