The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
