The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
